Forever Cheese Inc. Announces Expanded Recall

On September 26, 2012, the US Food and Drug Administration stated that Forever Cheese Inc. was expanding their recall on all Marte brand Ricotta Salata Frescolina cheese.  The product is imported from Italy.

Forever Cheese Inc. originally announced on September 14, 2012 that some of the products may contain an organism called Listeria Monocytogenes.  The FDA reports that the organism can cause serious or even fatal infections in children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems.  Healthy adults may still experience some of the following symptoms: high fever, stiffness, nausea, serious headache, abdominal pain, and/or diarrhea.

The FDA specifically warns pregnant women to avoid this product.  The Listeria infection can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.

The cheese product is sold at grocery stores and restaurants in the following states: Alaska, California, Connecticut, Washington D.C., Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Washington.  The product was sold between September 1, 2011 and August 31, 2012.

The FDA reports that a total of 15 people have contracted the infection in 12 different states to this date.  Consumers are encouraged to check with vendors where they purchased any Ricotta Salata to make sure the product was relabeled.

The following product codes are located on the original wheels of the recalled product:
