Select Evenflo Big Kid Booster Seats Recalled

On October 22, 2012, the Department of Transportation announced that certain Evenflo Big Kid Factory Select booster seats do not meet requirements under No. 213 of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.  The affected model numbers include the following:

The affected model numbers were shipped between August 6 and September 18 of 2012.

Some of the seats were only manufactured to be displayed in retail stores instead of sold.  These select seats—about 151 total—did not come with the required instruction manual or registration card.  None of the affected seats were sold in retail stores but were given to families in hospitals and government agencies instead.

Because the seats did not come with the instruction manual, guardians may use and fasten the seat incorrectly.  Additionally, owners who did not receive a registration card cannot personally receive any notification about future safety recalls.  Whatever the case, the child is put at an increased risk of injury or death during an accident.

You can tell if you have an affected seat by looking for a display label on the back of the booster seat’s headrest.  The affected seats will have the following words: “Display Only—Not Intended for Sale.”  If you have a display Big Kid booster seat, you need to call Evenflo at 1-800-233-5921 or visit their website.

Once you notify Evenflo, you’ll receive a consumer registration card, an instruction manual, and another label to cover up the “Display Only” label.  Make sure you keep the registration card and instruction manual in a safe place in case you need them in the future.

If you have additional questions about the recall, you can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit their website.
