Voluntary Limited Recall Announced by Sunland, Inc. Because of Health Risk

On September 24, 2012, Sunland, Inc. announced that they were engaging a voluntary limited recalls for products containing almond butter and peanut butter.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that products containing the almond butter or peanut butter that were manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012 may contain Salmonella.

The voluntary recall began after the company learned that, between June 11, 2012 and September 2, 2012, 29 people were infected with Salmonella Bredeney PFGE.  The illness was reported in Washing, California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Maryland.

Jimmie Shearer, President and CEO of Sunland, Inc. made the following statement:

“There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our customers, particularly the many families who enjoy our peanut butter every day.  While FDA, CDC, and State Health Agencies investigate to confirm the cause of illnesses reported, as a precautionary step, we have decided to voluntarily recall our Almond Butter and Peanut Butter products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012.”

The FDA strongly encourages consumers to keep from eating the products.  Sunland, Inc. reports that customers can return the product for a full refund.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause fatal infections in children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems.  Healthy people will normally only experience a fever, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain.  If you’ve experienced any of these symptoms after eating the Sunland products, you need to contact your local healthcare provider right away.  If left untreated, Salmonella can cause arterial infections like infected aneurysms, endocarditis, and even arthritis.
